Mock Interviews
This is an activity usually carried out for students in Year 10 where employers are invited into a school to interview students on a one to one basis. It is preferable to interview the young person for a position that is a ‘real job’ within your company as this is a role you would understand and gives the young person an idea of something that could be a vacancy in the future at your business. As an employer you are encouraged to feedback on the young person’s performance, dress code and language so they can take this constructive criticism forwards when being interviewed for a real job. You might even spot potential in a future candidate!
Careers Fairs
This event gives employers a chance to showcase their business to young people by sharing the workings of their company, highlighting entry routes and roles within organisations. It’s an effective way to advertise your company to future employees and increase awareness in your sector to any year group from Year 8 upwards. Students are often proactive in asking questions and this gives them the opportunity to learn about varying businesses. Employers are required to set up a stand and students can approach you throughout the event. Employers are provided with an ‘Employer Pack’ which includes full information on the event.
Careers Carousels
Companies are encouraged to participate as one of the range of employers from a variety of sectors to introduce students to the skills required within your industry or profession in a speed networking format to any year group from Year 8 upwards. Students have short timed sessions with employers where they will question you about your job role, what qualifications your business would require and progression routes into your industry. Employers are provided with an ‘Employer Pack’ which includes full information on the event.
Employer Talks
Presenting to a group of students about your role and organisation is a great way for employers to discuss their sector and in more depth. It gives the students a chance to hear from a professional and gain an invaluable insight into the workings of your business and entry routes. Employers usually deliver a presentation for 30 minutes followed by a question and answer session where students can interact with employers.
Site Visits
Services for Young People can arrange for a group of students in any year group to come and visit your workplace. This is a great way to showcase what you do as an employer and the various roles and responsibilities within your organisation. Students get the chance to tour your workplace and hear from different members of staff. SfYP can guide you with this process and attend the visit to facilitate the event. This is usually over a two hour period.
Primary school workshops
Services for Young people's primary school programme ‘Rocket into the Future’ encourages primary aged students to think about working life, jobs and careers and their aspirations for the future. It is designed to support schools in ensuring their students are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of future life. Missions are completed through a range of interactive and stimulating activities. The ‘Shooting Stars’ session invites employers to take part in the ‘Mystery Guest’ question and answer activity, where students are encouraged to ask questions with the aim of guessing the mystery guests job. Employers can then give a short presentation about their company and job role. Following this students take part in an activity designed to introduce them to some of the key skills needed for the world of work. The session will usually last an hour, with some employers staying longer to support extra activities
