The Education (Careers Guidance in Schools) Act 2022 places schools under a duty to secure access to independent careers guidance for their pupils from Year 7 to Year 13. It states that the guidance must be presented in an impartial manner and promote the best interests of the pupils to whom it is given. It should also include information on options available in respect of 16-18 education or training, including apprenticeships.
Schools and colleges need to make arrangements for impartial careers guidance that fits the needs and circumstances of their students, and will need to engage in partnership with external, expert providers to fulfil this statutory duty.
However, Hertfordshire Local Authority will retain the responsibility to ensure young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are assessed under Section 139A of the Learning and Skills Act. Services for Young People undertakes this duty on behalf of Hertfordshire Local Authority.
