Young people in Broxbourne get hands-on construction work experience

30 October 2024

This month, young people in Broxbourne had a unique opportunity to gain experience in the construction industry as part of the refurbishment of Waltham Cross Young People’s Centre, helping them develop new skills and build confidence.

Funded by a grant from the Youth Investment Fund, the refurbishment of Waltham Cross Young People’s Centre aims to improve the facilities and upgrade the equipment to better meet the needs of young people and create an inclusive community space.

Young people have been central to this transformation process. In partnership with the construction company Mulalley, Services for Young people (SfYP) offered 25 young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and care leavers the chance to take part in work placements and taster sessions.

Five young people participated in a two-day work experience placement, and 20 others joined half-day taster sessions. They worked alongside builders, exploring various trades, including bricklaying, tiling, painting, and decorating.

Young people enjoyed meeting the builders and shared their positive experiences:

“It was very amazing and awesome. I learned how to do bricklaying - I’ve never done that before.”

“The tiling and bricklaying was good, and I learned a new skill.”

These experiences are part of the many opportunities provided by SfYP, which enable young people to develop important life skills and make a successful transition to adulthood.

Our new online Recruitment Hub helps young people transition into the workforce, offering comprehensive support for those aged 16+ who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). The hub provides access to job vacancies, apprenticeships, traineeships, and further education opportunities.

Young people who are not in school or college can also visit the 11-5 Projects at SfYP young people’s centres for help with education, training, or finding a job or apprenticeship.

SfYP also works closely with schools and colleges, offering services including careers education, advice, work experience and work-related learning. These services help students explore career options, gain practical skills, and prepare for their future careers. Find out more about our services for schools and colleges.
