National Apprenticeship Week acknowledges the positive impact and contributions that apprentices make to communities, businesses and the economy. Taking place from 5 to 11 February, the 2024 theme is ‘Skills for life’, highlighting the importance of developing skills for a rewarding career and encouraging employers to build a workforce prepared for the future.
An apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity for young people aged 16 and over to get practical work experience combined with education. They achieve nationally recognised qualifications while also earning a salary.
According to a recent Department for Education report on apprenticeships in England, there has been a 7% increase in the number of young people starting apprenticeships nationally in the last academic year. In Hertfordshire, 2,300 young people began apprenticeships, 61% of whom were aged 16 to 24.
Services for Young People (SfYP) supports young people to explore different career options, including apprenticeships, identify their goals and develop skills for work to increase their chances of success.
Apprenticeship success stories
We heard back from some of the young people we helped secure apprenticeships last year.
A young person from Hemel Hempstead has now achieved a Level 3 apprenticeship as a television production assistant. Reflecting on his journey, he said:
“...This time last year I was in a position with no qualifications, but fast forward a year later, I am back on track and getting to work in something I’m ambitious about. I would like to remind everyone that hope is never to be lost!”
Another young person found his ideal apprenticeship within a few weeks with the help of SfYP Advisers in the East Herts Team:
“I have some very exciting news to share. I've been offered a position as an IT engineer apprentice…! This opportunity aligns perfectly with what I've been searching for and can kick start my career in IT. The great thing about this job too is the fact that as I progress, there are many different departments within the firm that I can choose to specialise in once I know what I am better at. I'm truly grateful for all the help and support you have provided in launching my career.”
Know a young person who would benefit from our support?
Young people not at school or college can get information, advice and support with progressing into education, training or finding a job or apprenticeship at SfYP young people's centres. As well as exploring career pathways, our Advisers can help young people to write job and apprenticeship applications, find work experience placements, and plan for their future.
Those aged 16 to 19 who live in Hertfordshire can also register for an SfYP account to receive tailored information on job vacancies, apprenticeships, traineeships, and further education opportunities.
Professionals who work with young people can make a referral to SfYP.
