The comprehensive Matrix Standard assessment, conducted by an independent assessor on behalf of the Department for Education, involved extensive evidence gathering through onsite visits to Stevenage, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead, as well as virtual interviews. The process included 42 staff interviews, 13 recipient interviews and 14 partner interviews, alongside a thorough review of key documents such as SfYP’s Strategic and Operational Plan and many policies.

The assessment and subsequent report highlighted many areas where SfYP excels, setting a benchmark for similar IAG services nationwide. These included:

Quality of delivery

The quality of SfYP’s delivery is consistently high, with partners praising the professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff. The bespoke nature of its IAG services ensures that they are tailored to the specific needs of each school or college, taking into account the latest local labour market information. This contextual approach reassures schools and colleges that their students are receiving relevant and effective support.

Individualised support

One of the standout features of SfYP practitioners is their commitment to treating young people as individuals. They were praised for their ability to boost young people’s confidence and self-belief through this personalised approach, identified as a significant factor in the positive changes observed in the young people they work with.

Innovative and flexible services

The matrix assessment report highlighted SfYP’s innovative methods, including its use of young people’s centres across Hertfordshire and its high-quality digital communications, which ensure professionals working with young people, parents/carers and the young people themselves know how to access all relevant services and can do so easily.

The introduction of the new SfYP Recruitment Hub streamlines SfYP’s services for young people who are not in education, employment or training. It helps young people access the support specifically designed for their circumstances and needs, to enable them to successfully transition into sustained employment, training or education.

Commitment to continuous professional development

SfYP places a strong emphasis on the continuing professional development (CPD) of all its staff and the sharing of good practices. This focus on professional growth ensures that staff are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge, enhancing the overall quality of service delivery.

Strong leadership and professionalism

SfYP’s success is attributed to its strong leadership and the professionalism of its staff. The report praises the clear direction and support provided by senior leaders and management. This ensures that staff are well-equipped to deliver high-quality services and are well-supported and motivated to achieve the best outcomes for young people. The dedication and enthusiasm of SfYP staff were noted as key factors in the service’s positive reputation among schools and partners.

Robust monitoring and evaluation

The service was found to have robust systems in place for monitoring targets and evaluating outcomes. Projects are well-managed, with evidence of their effectiveness and impact meticulously documented. This rigorous approach to evaluation helps SfYP demonstrate the value and impact of its services. Feedback from schools and partners is also actively used to review and enhance services, demonstrating a commitment to evolving and improving.

Positive impact

The significant impact of SfYP’s work is evident from the positive feedback received from young people, parents/carers and partners such as schools and colleges. The testimonials highlight the significant difference SfYP makes to young people’s confidence, self-belief and life prospects. Tools such as the Outcome Star and the Quality of Practice Tool, are used to measure the effectiveness of interventions, and ensure continuous improvement.

In conclusion, SfYP stands out as a model of best practice in the provision of IAG services. The Matrix Standard accreditation is a testament to the hard work, dedication and innovative approaches of the service. SfYP remains committed to evolving and improving its services to meet the needs of Hertfordshire’s young people.
