LGBT+ History Month celebrates the contributions and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The event aims to raise awareness and understanding of the history of LGBT+ rights, highlighting the progress that has been made and identifying areas for improvement to combat prejudice and discrimination against LGBT+ people.
Young people attending Services for Young People (SfYP) youth work projects across the county had the chance to explore gender identity, learn about LGBT+ history, and discuss their ideas for a diverse and inclusive future. The projects provide a safe and supportive space for young people to be themselves and promote inclusivity.
In Watford, young adults with special educational needs at the SfYP Starburst Project learnt about different gender identities and the importance of using preferred pronouns.
Young people attending SfYP projects in the Three Rivers district made posters for display at our young people’s centres to raise awareness and show the importance of LGBT+ History Month. These sparked meaningful discussions about the challenges experienced by LGBT+ people both in the past and present.
SfYP Youth Workers in Dacorum organised a series of activities for young people throughout the month. This included exploring a timeline of LGBT+ history and rights, the meanings behind different LGBT+ flags, and celebrating the achievements of famous LGBT+ people. The month's themed activities ended with a reflective discussion about young people’s hopes and dreams for the future of the LGBT+ community.
Young people took pride in creating badges to wear inspired by LGBT+ flags and looked at the events leading to the making of the film ‘Pride’, discussing how trade unions and LGBT+ groups worked together for positive change. This led to talking about how they could work with different communities to make a difference.
As well as our youth work projects in all districts of Hertfordshire, SfYP runs eight youth work projects specifically to support young people aged 13-17 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or are exploring their sexual or gender identity. At these projects, young people can meet other young LGBT+ people, discuss issues that matter to them, and get support and advice from our qualified Youth Workers and Advisers.
