Youth Workers from the Services for Young People (SfYP) Hertsmere Team have been supporting the Hertswood Friday Night Project at Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood over the last two months.
The project was set up in April 2022 by Sporting Inspirations CIC, School of Hard Knocks, Hertswood Academy, Clarion Housing and Herts Sports Partnership, to offer young people in the area the opportunity to take part in free sports activities on Friday evenings. The organisers contacted SfYP for support, having identified that many of the young people attending would benefit from speaking to professional Youth Workers.
One of the SfYP Youth Workers said:
“We have been able to talk to the young people at the project about sexual health, healthy relationships and any other issues affecting them. As well as offering young people information and advice, we also signpost them to further support through SfYP projects as needed.”
SfYP delivers projects across all districts of Hertfordshire which help young people to stay safe and recognise and develop healthy relationships.
Young people can also access sexual health services, such as free condoms, free chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing and free pregnancy testing from their local SfYP Access Point Project.
Feedback from the founders of the Hertswood Friday Night Project:
“Young people look forward to the SfYP Youth Workers coming each week and are keen to engage with them. The Youth Workers connect with the young people well and the partnership has supported the overall outcomes of the project.”
Following the success of this trial partnership, Youth Workers from the SfYP Hertsmere Team will continue to support the Hertswood Friday Night Project in 2023.
