The Plough Roundabout community art project was organised by Dacorum Borough Council and funded by the Hemel Hempstead Business Improvement District (BID). The aim was to create a welcoming, safe, happy and calm space in the town centre for people to enjoy. Over 15 local artists, volunteers and local businesses and organisations, including Services for Young People (SfYP), were involved. The project was managed by Anna Schofield, a local artist and founder of Dacorum Creatives.
Design and planning workshops were held at the SfYP Bennetts End Young People’s Centre in July. Young people from the Dacorum Youth Council contributed their ideas on colours and textures, suggesting that the colour scheme was lightened to make the underpass feel safer and more positive. These suggestions were taken on board, and a young person studying A-level art finalised the design and colour scheme.

Project members, including young people, a Youth Worker, and the Youth Work Practice Manager from the SfYP St Albans and Dacorum Team, helped to paint the final design.
A young person, who is starting a photography course at West Herts College in September, filmed and photographed the project. It was a great opportunity for them to practice skills and enhance their portfolio.

The Plough Roundabout project was a big success, transforming the underpass into a vibrant and welcoming space. Young people had their voices heard, gained valuable experience and were able to work as part of a team. They received positive feedback from the public, which created a sense of community and pride. All volunteers were thanked at an event organised by Dacorum Borough Council on 31 July.
The young person involved in finalising the design for the project said:
“I didn’t think I would be too involved in the project but as I started designing, I got really into it. Working with Anna and seeing everyone come through the underpass and being positive, was lovely.”
The young person who filmed and photographed the project added:
“It was a fun... A great way to start off a photography career. There were nice people who were encouraging. A great experience.”
